Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi Chuan, an art of serenity

Seeing for the first time Chinese people practising Tai Chi Chuan in parks at dawn is a fascinating experience, amongst other things because of the grace and slow pace of the uninterrupted movements.

To enter the way of Tai Chi Chuan is to open oneself to an infinite search for flexibility, gentleness and harmony, all of which are of benefit to the body as well as to the mind. Practice is based on a refined coordination of bodily movements and on the concentration of Chi, the inner energy.

Benefits of Tai Chi Chuan :

  • Relax the body and the mind and help coping with stress and tensions from our modern society.
  • Increase and balance energy levels
  • Softly tone up muscles, bones and tendons
  • Give a better balance and bearing
  • Relieve countless pains and functional disorders such as hypertension, digestive, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders
  • Promote sleeping quality
  • Boost memory and concentration abilities

Tai Chi Chuan, a martial art

The succession of Tai Chi Chuan movements is in fact a long fight in slow motion with an invisible partner. Each movement has its own martial logic and can be tested for efficiency. If the movement is efficient and correct, it will enable the Chi to “channel through” and to be powerful. The subtlety of such movements does not measure in physical strength but in a person’s ability to “let go”.

The form

Vital for practice is the careful study of the succession of movements called “The Form of Tai Chi Chuan”. It can be practised alone or in a group and could be viewed as a “meditation in motion”. One moves in a quiet, relaxed and concentrated way, in unison with one’s breathing.
As far as health is concerned, practising the Form will stimulate the meridians, or energetic channels. The body actually “opens up” and the energy within is freed to build up a tremendous inner strength.

Pushing Hands and working in pairs

Tui Shou, San Shou or Da Loi: all are practised with a partner and promote “self-centering” and becoming aware of one’s energy. It all looks like playing in a smooth and gentle mode; no strength is required or used. These techniques require that one is familiar with the movements of the Form in order to be able to test the subtlety of their energetic and martial power.

The Sword Form

Using a weapon (sword, broad sword, fan, …) offers aesthetic beauty but, over and above that, it enables Chi to channel beyond body limits and hence to build up energetic effects. Practising these specific forms will multiply one’s abilities and mastering of movements.
